Are you looking for something cheeky, different and downright delicious to give your loved one this Valentine's Day??? Well, how about one of these offensive cupcakes?!

From Friday 10th until Tuesday 14th February Maiden on Shoreditch High Street will be selling a capsule collection of highly offensive cupcakes as part of their Valentine’s Day celebrations.

At first glance these appear to be cute and traditional cupcakes in a very girly pink. However, when you look closer you will see that within each pretty pink heart is a very rude message!
Customers can choose from four profane valentines “greetings”:

SUCK MY DICK
EAT ME OUT
I LOVE CUM
These delicious cakes are a mere £2 each and are vanilla sponge with vanilla buttercream. They are made using free range eggs and are suitable for vegetarians. All cakes are made locally in Hackney by Cakey Muto. Cakey Muto is a newly opened and fabulous new bakery/café/music venue on Chatsworth Road in Hackney.

The cakes will be on sale at Maiden, 188 Shoreditch High Street, London, E1 6HU from 10th Friday 10th February to Tuesday 14th February.

ATP POP-UP SHOP DOWNSTAIRS AT MAIDEN: THURS 17TH NOVEMBER TO SATURDAY 19TH NOVEMBER

In addition to the revamp of their online store, from Thursday 17th-Saturday 19th November renowned festival organisers ATP will be opening their very first pop-up shop in London. ATP will be taking over the basement of Maiden, 188 Shoreditch High Street, London E1 6HU for three days.

Maiden, situated on the south end of Shoreditch High Street, sells a wonderful mixture of products that are fun, colourful, light-hearted and playful. Maiden sells everything, but not anything; wallpaper, wall stickers, ceramics, gifts, books, lighting and toys. Like an Aladdin's cave, Maiden is filled to the rafters with all manner of things: think giant rubber ducks, Chinese waving cats, animal egg cups, David Bowie masks and potato guns. Maiden is a shop full of everything you ever wanted to own, just for the sheer sake of it. As well as the ever changing ranges of product on the ground floor the Maiden also has a basement which has played host to a number of specatularly different temporary events. From fashion, to art, to royal memorabilia, all manner of things have gone on downstairs at Maiden; there was even the World's first X rated cake shop there for four days in 2010 (the vagina cupcakes sold out in under an hour).

The ATP Pop Up Store will be open from 11am-7.30pm on Thursday 17th and Friday 18th November, and from 11am-6.30pm on Saturday 19th November. In store we will be selling:
-Tickets for Upcoming ATP shows without booking fee - These will include our Battles, Gang Gang Dance, Magic Band, Superchunk, Panda Bear, Thurston Moore, Mister Heavenly, Wolf People, Explosions In The Sky and Olivia Tremor Control London shows.
-CD & Vinyl - Albums & Singles by Sleepy Sun, Fuck Buttons, Deerhoof, Autolux, Magic Band, Alex Tucker and more. Some of these are compilations by artists who curated previous festivals, these include Autechre, Shellac & Matt Groening. Some of the vinyl are coloured, picture discs special editions. We'll be selling our Spiritualized Pill Box Sets - 12 CD box sets featuring the 'Ladies and Gentlemen' album + Loads of extras.
-Custom Mades - By Deerhoof, Alexander Tucker & Drones. These are limited edition double 7"s where the artist gets to pick the tracks they put on from their own work- something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.
-ATP DVD - The feature length ATP Film on PAL DVD.
-Tote Bags - From the Animal Collective & IBYM UK Curated by Portishead events.
-T-shirts & Hoodies - At least one design for nearly every each festival we've run, featuring designs by Michael Motorcycle, Tim Biskup, Tara McPherson, Kii Arens, James King, Pete Fowler, Matt Groening and more.
-Baby Grows - The last stock of our special ATP baby grows.
-Posters - Various prints ranging from screen print through to Giclee quality. -Designers include: Amos, Michael Motorcycle, Kii Arens, Tim Biskup, Matt Groening, Tara McPherson, Kathie Olivas, Will Schaff.
-Previous ATP Programmes - A variety of previous ATP programmes will be sold at a low price, these are all unique and commemorative of each festival. This will be the first time they’ve been available after the events. Designers for this include: James King, Kii Arens, Tim Biskup, Tara McPherson, Will Scheff, Michael Motorcycle, Matt Groening.
-Dolbees - Our limited edition vinyl toys that we released at each festival over a period, the initial toy design was by MAD and further designers were invited to put their own artwork on subsequent ones. All Tomorrow’s Parties is an organisation based in London that has been promoting festivals, concerts and records throughout the world for over ten years. It was founded by Barry Hogan in 1999 in preparation for the first All Tomorrow’s Parties festival, the line-up of which was curated by Mogwai and took place in the unusual setting of Pontins Holiday Camp, Camber Sands.

An exciting group of artists, illustrators and graphic designers have been invited by Maiden and East End Prints to re imagine classic horror characters in an innocent and playful way. Artwork featuring well “loved” characters from all of our favourite scary movies will cover the walls of the basement at Shoreditch’s favourite shop Maiden. This really is going to be a frighteningly good show!

The Shoreditch Design Triangle is one of the many local hubs around London which form part of the London Design Festival 2011 (15-25 September 2011). Over 30 shops, galleries and spaces in Shoreditch are participating in this exciting event which will showcase the strength and diversity of the Shoreditch design community.

On Tuesday 20th September most Shoreditch locations will be staying open late and hosting an array of special launches, parties and workshops. All the
venues are within easy walking distance around the Shoreditch Triangle
so head East and make a night of it.

At MAIDEN we are proud to present a series of six brand new and exclusive light switch stickers designed by Henrietta Swift. We've stocked Henrietta's light switch stickers since MAIDEN opened in 2009; customers have always been delighted by the way such a simple and well executed idea completely brings the ordinarily dull light switch to life.

MAIDEN continues its mission to bring fun, creative products to life by hosting an interactive display of the fantastic range of COLOUR ME GOOD colouring-in books by I LOVE MEL.

The downstairs space at Maiden will be transformed into a brightly coloured “colouring-in cave” where visitors can sit and colour in pages from Mel’s fabulous books.

Although all the COLOUR ME GOOD titles will be featured, there will be a particular focus on the newest book in the series, ‘80s, which features a delightfully daft selection of icons and images from 1980s pop culture just begging for a felt tip pen to get to grips with them. Timmy Mallet, Bob “I’ll have a P please” Holness , Molly Ringwold, Dusty Bin, Orville, Charles and Di… all the favourites from the decade are there.
Mel will also be creating a magnificent 1980s shop window featuring work from her ‘80s book alongside a selection of the original items that inspired it.

ABOUT I LOVE MEL

I Love Mel started out life as a few badges that were made and handed out to make Mel Simone Elliott feel better after her boyfriend dumped her.

On Graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2007, Mel began designing fun, printed products such as colouring books and paper dolls and I Love Mel became less of a badge and more of a brand. Mel is originally from Barnsley in Yorkshire and now lives with her husband and three children in Northamptonshire.

The COLOUR ME GOOD series began in 2009 with Colour Me Good 'Kate Moss' and now also includes the titles Fashion, Art, Record Sleeves and London (with a Colour Me Good '90s on the way!)

We've stocked these genius record frames at MAIDEN for a while now but we decided to do a HUGE display of them on our wall so that we can show off the full potential of the product.

Sourcing the albums featured in our display was really good fun and it certainly brought back many memories. The 12 inch album format was the perfect canvas for photographers and art directors to show off their skills. Ofcourse we had to include the obvious classic covers like Aladdin Sane and Island Life, but our personal favourite is Atlantic Crossing, with Rod Stewart striding confidently accross the ocean in his pink flares and platform shoes!

The Twelve Inch record frame is a simple and visually effective way to display vinyl covers. At £7.50 per frame it is also a lot less expensive than some of the other record frames on the market.

The four grooved batons which make up the sides of the frame have strong magnets in each end, the frame just snaps into place around the record; it really is terribly easy!

It goes without saying that we were delighted to hear that Her Royal Highness is returning to the retail world with a brand new venture intriguingly titled THE AMWELL STREET KNOCKING SHOP.

Cakes for Japan is a pop-up sushi inspired cake shop raising funds for the Red Cross following the devastating events in Japan.

Professional and amateur cake makers from all over London are donating edible goodies which will be sold at Maiden, on 188 Shoreditch High Street on Friday 18th March, 1100-1900. 100 percent of all money taken is being donated to charity. Here's a sneak peek of our royal wedding exhibition MY BIG FAT ROYAL WEDDING. We spent yesterday ironing newspapers from the day of Charles and Diana's wedding (29 July 2011). Once we'd ironed out 30 years worth of creases we then proceeded to mount them onto our basement walls.

We'll be doing loads more stuff in the basement to get it ready for our official launch night on 7th April!

East End Prints have also commissioned some of their artists to produce artworks based around the loose theme of the Royal Wedding.Affordable prints and originals nestle alongside Charles and Di memorabilia (which is all for sale).

The immanent launch of Richard Mortimer's Ponystep Magazine is about to go off big time. For their first issue the Richard has pulled off a real coup de grace with his cover stars.

He's not only got fashion legend/rock royalty Jerry Hall looking amazing in YSL on one cover, but he also has KYLIE looking sexy as hell in Alaia on the other. Now that's what I call a launch issue.

Between the awesome covers Ponystep Magazine is choc-a-bloc with amazing features (read more here) including a lovely feature on Maiden's owner Noah Crutchfield! Many of our favourite people are also featured and/or involved in the magazine. Princess Julia interviews Kylie and both Josh Quinton and Felicity Hayward (who took residence in our basement for the Glorified Pound Shop event last September) are also featured in one of the fashion stories. This April Maiden in Shoreditch will be going Royal Wedding crazy… but there’s a twist. Kate and William will be virtually absent from these celebrations because during April at Maiden it’s all about Charles & Diana’s wedding of 1981. The Mad Artists Tea Party gang are also going to be selling some very subversive cakes celebrating past and present Royal Weddings (yes you are right to be afraid), and will also branching out with the sale of bacon bouquets the wedding breakfast of choice!

On 29th July 1981 an estimated 700 million people watched Lady Diana Spencer walk up the aisle of St Paul’s Cathedral (it took some effort as the train of her wedding dress was 25 feet in length) to meet HRH Prince of Wales. 600,000 people lined the streets of London hoping to catch a glimpse of the blushing bride and her Prince Charming. Those who are old enough to remember the day will always remember it fondly.

The team at Maiden have spent weeks collecting an amazing array of memorabilia and souvenirs from the Royal Wedding of 30 years ago. MISS CAKEHEAD TAKES OVER AT THE LONDON DUNGEON ON VALENTINES DAY

Some of the guys behind last Halloween's Eat Your Heart Out event at Maiden have teamed up with the London Dungeon for a really sick Valentines Day treat for all you couples out there. Looks fun. Wish I wasn't single!

In typical subversive style, London’s top scare attraction, The London Dungeon, is doling out cupcakes with a difference this Valentine’s Day (14th February 2011). Forget sugar candied heart shapes and pretty flowers, and think oozing, gruesome human hearts. The attraction is teaming up with the notorious Miss Cakehead, famed for the incomparable ‘Eat Your Heart Out’ cake shop, and inviting those who prefer their romance with a bit more bite to eat their hearts out. Couples visiting the dungeons on February 14th will be given a heart ventricle cupcake to eat amongst the horror of the attraction’s Blood & Guts exhibition; a recreation of a filthy makeshift operating theatre where a blundering butcher surgeon performs horrific blood soaked surgery in graphic detail (on even the most unwilling of patients)! So the big question is do you have the stomach to literally eat your loved one’s heart out?

I know I can stomach it (I’d do anything for love as Meatloaf says) but can you?..

FUTUREHEADS X DAVID SHRIGLEY

Miss Cakehead tipped us off about this new and exciting project and we couldn't resist blogging it.

The Futureheads, have collaborated with iconic artists including David Shrigley and Stuart Semple to create a series of limited edition prints, raising money for Newcastle based charities with all of the artists generously giving their time for free. The project came about as the band discussed ways to celebrate their 10th birthday, ahead of their ‘Futurefest’ gig on the 23rd December in Newcastle. For the ‘FH10’ project the band sent each one of the artists an album, and asked them to respond to its music as if creating the album cover for the first ever time. Taking about the project Ross Millard of the band said:

For us, FH10 is a brilliant way of us celebrating ten years of making music together; new life breathed into our back-catalogue by four artists whose work we have admired from afar for many years.

We wanted to celebrate our first decade in a creative way, not by slobbering over a few pints, desperately trying to recall venues we played back in the early days, but by looking toward the future by giving birth to something new – having new creations to enjoy and shout about.

Over the years we’ve written and recorded a lot of music, and in the last few years we’ve even released some of it ourselves too, but projects like this one, that operate on the fringes of the music, are often the most fun to be part of, because they can teach you a thing or two about a world you don’t inhabit on a daily basis. It’s been wonderful collaborating with artists who can re-interpret our music into something completely new and invigorating – waiting to see what they’d come back with was really exciting.

Each of the prints is available in a strictly limited edition run of 100, signed by the artists and priced at £50. They will go on sale during the first week of December via leading online cultural retailer Culture Label, from the 6th December, no pre-orders can be taken.

DAVID BOWIE X MICK RONSON X BRITISH RAIL

On Wednesday night we skipped across the road to Idea Generation for the Private View of the Mick Rock:Rock Music exhibition. The gallery was absolutely jam packed and there was a real buzz about the place.

I have to say I was blown away by the images on show. More Bowie than you could shake a stick at plus loads of Blondie, Bryan Ferry, Gaga, Madonna and my personal hero Mick Ronson!

My favourite image of the entire exhibition has to be the photo of Bowie and Ronson having lunch together on a train to Aberdeen; their hair cuts , outfits and expressions are insanely amazing. I went round snapping some other highlights with my blackberry... see the results below.

The Exhibition runs until 16 January and it's FREE admission. How Amazing!

The girls from fashion blog YES BRIAN YOU LOOK TERRIFIC are about to warm us up for a super duper vintage christmas when they pop up downstairs at Maiden from 12th to 14th November!

Brian’s Winter Wonderland aims to bring some of London’s best retro jewellery and vintage suppliers, along with hand-picked pieces such as Brian’s winter woollies, 80’s party frocks, coats, bags, boots and scarves.

The girls tell us that prices are all very reasonable indeed; winter coats start from just £20 and bags at start at around a tenner! How good is that?!

London legend and music editor of i-D Magazine Princess Julia has assembled a vintage “A Team” consisting of Josh Quinton, Hannah Hooper, Felicity Hayward and Lilee Cathcart who have searched far and wide to source a breathtaking array of original and specialist vintage pieces to entice and amuse one and all.
Clothing, shoes and accessories from 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 00’s have been especially selected for this unique house of design. The Glorified £ Shop is an ideal opportunity to source and be inspired by styles and looks of by gone eras.

Princess Julia said “The interest in retro and recycled style has never been more inspiring; by mixing the traditional with the radical- the trad with the rad- style icons of London have never been more vibrant and varied. Thames and Hudson will publish this sumptuous coffee table book full of pictures that capture her outrageous looks, style and charm. There will also be contributions by many of Isabella's friends.... Manolo Blahnik, Paul Smith, Philip Treacy....

Reason 2
Detmar Blow will publish this memoir about his life with Isabella.

Both books promise to showcase very different sides of the intriguing creature that was Isabella Blow and I cannot wait to have them on the shelves at Maiden.

SCRIMSHAW

Just received another delivery of these amazing melamine trays. It features a fantastic image of a whale which is based on the scrimshaw art which was practiced by sailors out at sea on whaling ships many years ago. Something about the whale reminds me of school trips to Natural History Museum and this gigantic live sized model of a blue whale on display.

Unfortunately that memory also made me remember the awful packed lunch we were forced to eat at gunpoint on the lawns outside the museum (spam sandwiches on white bread all round). Anyway.... I found this video clip of what must be a retired CDT teacher explaining how to make your own scrimshaw pieces

Putting up our new Marilyn Monroe wall sticker yesterday was quite a surreal experience. It came in seven pieces, so I was at the top of a ladder shouting down "hand me the left eyebrow", "hand me the beauty spot" etc etc.

I then found this image that was part of an advertising campaign in Brazil to promote some kind of yoghurt called Fit Light Dairy?!

As part of the same campaign they also did a "tribute" to Sharon Stone....

I'm not sure what the message is here. Is it supposed to be funny? Apparently the tag line for adverts is translated as "Forget about it. Men's preference will never change. Fit Light Yogurt" ????

FAYE DUNAWAY EATS AN EGG

By a curious coincidence I was flicking through a lovely old biography of Faye Dunaway on the same day that I received an e mail from the divine Sybil Rouge which contained a link to this video of Faye chowing down on a hard boiled egg.

This seriously bizarre yet captivating footage is actually a commercial for the Japanese department store Parco. It was made by Kazumi Kurigami, you can check out his youtube channel here , there are some really amazing old commercials on there.

My favourite has to be this one for Knorr soup starring Sylvester Stallone! I love how camp Sly is when he claps his hands together and mouths "bravo" to the kids he's directing....

Maiden took delivery of these genius tea towels the other day. I love the way the design takes an affectionate swipe at the fundamental lack of any nutritional value in a lot of British "cuisine".

The deep fried Mars bar repulses me and I can't think of anything I would rather eat less. I nearly fell off my chair when I saw this video of Delia Smith making a Mars bar "special".

The ingredients are 1 Mars bar and 1/2 lb of fat?????????

HEROINE CHIC

When I was feeling a little demotivated last week my friend Jamie told me that whenever he needs to get proactive he looks at pictures of Mary Portas and finds that helps him. So I did and it worked.

These images of such a dynamic and inspirational person soon got me out of my mini slump.

They conjured up a vision of Mary hands on hips, ten huge bangles on each arm, sleeves rolled up, towering over me in a high heeled shoe boot, telling me to get with the program.

During my frantic search for Portas pics I discovered that Mary has now developed an exciting series of retail masterclasses aimed at owners of small independent shops (like Maiden). Developed in conjunction with Skillsmart Retail the Mary Portas Guide to Successful Retailing will give a unique insight into improving independent retail businesses and includes Mary’s advice on essential elements like visual merchandising, marketing, buying, finance and the all-important vision for the store.

Basically I think Mary Portas should be running the country.

My friend Marika today became the first person I actually know to be on the front page of a newspaper. The Muswell Hill Journal covered her pie making class and slapped her on the front (right beneath the unrelated headline MYSTERY GUNFIRE TERRIFIES TV STAR)!

Last night when I got home my flatmate Martina was interviewing Diane Pernet on Skype. I couldn't see Diane because her camera was intentionally switched off but she sounded amazing. Later on my friend Stanley told us about an interview that Diane did with Catherine Baba. We checked it out on youtube and I was enthralled. I'd never heard of Catherine before, but I am now a huge fan. This interview is amazing. Loving the white turban, sunglasses and fur coat (in summer).

Julia was interviewing her for i -D and the image of the two of them gossiping away on the phone made me weak at the knees. Opened in November 2009 Maiden sits comfortably on Shoreditch High Street, a transient road of bars, shops and restaurants all randomly eclectic in their offering. Maiden is a shop that has everything you would ever want, yet not necessarily need, the little things that make your life nicer and brighter. There is an indulgence of modern design items with a humorous touch. Speakers that look like huge iPod earphones share shelf space with giant Miffy lights and the ‘Mix Tape’ USB stick packaged like a cassette. The customer is also presented with a passionately edited selection of books that garner the attention of readers young and old. On offer you will discover sartorial advice from Christian Dior in Little Dictionary of Fashion, visual inspiration from Susan Sontag's classic On Photography and cooking lessons for the under 12s in Silver Spoon recipes for Children. There is even a Yves Saint Laurent colouring book!

Maiden’s owner Noah Crutchfield talks candidly about his inspiration for the shop and the considered selection of gifts pulled from around the globe. We delve deeper into the transparent customer ethos which sets Maiden aside from its peers and draws its customer back with friends in tow.

Martina Randles: What sets Maiden aside from other shops? Is the key to the success of a small independent shop, having better staff and offering a better service?

Noah Crutchfield: Definitely, I think that’s where a shop like Maiden wins; I want people who come into the shop to feel that I value their custom. It was a fantastic feeling when lots of people who purchased Christmas gifts from Maiden came back in the New Year and told me that the presents they had bought had been a real hit!

MR: When you are selecting merchandise for Maiden, do you have a muse, someone in mind that you’re buying the stock for?

NC: I trust my instincts when it comes to buying. I would not have anything in the shop that I wouldn’t like to be given or to own. I’m very lucky to have a large circle of incredibly creative, opinionated and honest friends, who I can ask for input when it comes to selecting product. I get emails all the time from friends saying “I’ve just seen something amazing for Maiden!” it’s great to have so many pairs of eyes out there!

MR: What in the shop would you buy for your Mum?
NC: I think I would give her something animal based, I know she loves animals. So I’d probably give her a waving cat, the type that can be found in Chinese restaurants; they bring you good luck and good fortune. Or maybe an animal face eggcup, they’re the best selling line in the entire shop, very Beatrix Potter/ Wind in the Willows - they remind me of the things I had as a child. In fact when I was selecting the children’s books for Maiden my Mum helped me to choose them because she still has all my books at home, we went through and ordered all the titles that were still in print. Customers come into the shop and see books like Funny Bones or Burglar Bill and they are literally ecstatic to see them again - it brings back so many fond memories.

MR: You’ve got quite a big selection of vintage books as well?
NC: A lot of the major bookshops have row upon row of brand new titles sitting there and it feels a bit dead, so for Maiden I wanted to select the best of new titles from fantastic publishers like Phaidon, Thames and Hudson and Laurence King alongside an eclectic selection of vintage titles, which I think customers will love and cherish. Miss Piggy’s Guide to Life proved an instant hit, Agatha Christie Penguin titles go like hot cakes, I had two customers tussling over a copy of Death on the Nile last week. Our selection of vintage Ladybird books is the favourite by far though.

MR: Was retail always something you’d planned to go into?
NC: No, what I wanted to be was always changing as I grew up, as I think it does with everyone, when I was six years old I was adamant that I was going to be the Archbishop of Canterbury! I eventually found myself at LSE studying philosophy at the same time as working weekends at Burberrys on Regents Street. At that time it was a classic English store, not like Burberry is now. It was like ‘Are You Being Served?’. I just thought it was really good fun, there were staff who had worked there for 35 years, they took real pride in their product knowledge and customer service, that’s what made me fall in love with retail.

MR: You're at the shop almost every day, aren't you exhausted, do you ever get bored?
NC: Absolutely not, because what other job would give me the opportunity to meet a hundred nice people a day. Each morning I just think to myself... there’s a whole world out there - I’m just going to get out there and sell things to it and because we have an online shop (www.maidenshop.com) I can literally do that on a daily basis!

MR: So did you always want to open your own shop? How did it come about?
NC: I’d been saying to people for the last five years that I’d like to have my own shop, I had just never summoned up enough courage to take the plunge - I thought it wouldn’t give me the security that I had working for someone else. With over ten years of retail experience from from reputatable stores including Harvey Nichols and Heal’s. I was Head of Retail at the Design Museum for two years and spent time running the shops at the Royal Academy and at Southbank Centre. I came to the conclusion it was time to strike out on my own. So I did and that’s why Maiden is here!

MR: I’m curious as to the location choice, why East London/Shoreditch High Street in particular?
NC: I’ve lived in East London for five years; it’s the first place in London that I’ve truly felt at home. I love the sense of community here and the mix of people - it's full of life. East London has one of the highest populations of artists, designers and creatives in the world. I really like it and can’t see myself living anywhere else for the foreseeable future.
